Pullen Is Kidding, Right?

By Mike DeArmond - Posted on 27 February 2010

Please tell me Jacob Pullen is kidding when he claims to be upset about Laurence Bowers' last-minute dunk on a breakaway to end Missouri's victory over Kansas State in Columbia?

“That type of stuff makes a rivalry game,” Pullen told The Star for a story published this morning, prior to tonight's return match in Manhappy. “Now we show no remorse. If we’re up 20, hopefully Frank doesn’t take us out and say, ‘Good game’ at the 2-minute mark.”

Hey, Jake, if it makes you feel better to place the disrespected card, fine. If it is what you need to get up for one of the biggest games in the Big 12 this season, okay.

But please, tell me you're not as silly as you sound.

Tell me that if Kansas State leads by four points with just a 10 seconds remaining tonight, you're not going to throw up one last three poiner, or finish a drive to the rim.

Tell me that, instead, you're going to walk over to Laurence Bowers and say, "Nice game, old chap. Do you like my beard?"

What is this? The Octagon of Doom? Or the Octagon of Dumb?

Game on, Jacob. And if Kansas State can win by 20, do it.

Look in the mirror

I'm not a "journalist" who needs to be objective. I am a fan. Try thinking before you pop off with a reply next time.

Is this your first time being around a competitive athletic event? You really thought that was a big deal, worthy of an entry? Here is some probing investigative reporting for you. Competitive athletes often look for the smallest of slights to enhance their edge. I would guess even mizzou athletes do this though maybe not given they don't seem to be all that competitive to begin with.

s do this though maybe not given they don't seem to be all that competitive to begin with.

They beat us the first time in basketball and beat us in football. You're embarassing.

Missouri is about as mediocre as you can get historically in both sports for a major university. They occasionally have some good runs but they never end in any major accomplishment. It is who they are.

Calling a college athlete "dumb" and "silly."

Wow.

Bag on the coach. Trash the fans. Whine about how the arena has a nickname you don't think it's "earned."

We get all that.

But to call out a 21-year old kid for making a statement that really doesn't mean ANYTHING? You've stooped to a new low. If Mike Gundy were our coach, I'd hate to be you the next time you met in a media room with him.

Personally, I'd feel the same way if I was Jake. The second Bowers dunked it in Round 1 I knew it'd be extra motivation for our players. Big deal. How is it any different than putting "bulletin board material" in the locker room to try to get a little more amped up for the game?

The next time one of your children says something you think is "silly" and "dumb," I hope you rip them in a public forum for everyone to see. That's not a shot at your children, either; it's meant to depict the situation in a different light: Jake is a kid - give him a break.

You're a joke.

1. Just like Anderson's comments in the postgame, you're trying to be cute with your words. "Last minute?" Really? We're talking last seconds. Not last minute. Nice try though.

2. I have never "placed" a card. Has anyone else ever "placed" a card? I've "played" cards...but honestly i don't really know how to place a card. Is that talking about how you place cards on a stack or something? Who knows what your journalistic mind is talking about.

3. Stop attacking everyone else. There is a major difference between you and every other blog writer on this site. They NEVER attack the other schools. Here you are calling a college athlete silly, or basically infer that he's dumb. It's absolutely ridiculous. So stop openly courting this nonsense.

Why is Mike DeArmond whining so much? Enjoy the flukey win in Columbia, don't worry about what Jake says. He is just pointing out the obvious, Bowers dunk was garbage.

Great. Now you're elevating a blog post on the Internet to the same level as a game-ending dunk as 10s on the scale of reasons to get a mad up?

FYI. I covered Kansas State basketball back in the Mike Evans, Curtis Redding, Rolando Blackman days. And those guys had a sense of humor, as well as self confidence.

But rant on. :) And thanks for reading and commenting.

That game was tight all the way to the end. Mizzou had a steal with about 5 seconds to go and Bowers capped off a hard fought win. If Pullen wants to use this to get himself motivated then so be it, but it is 100% stupid.

Fifteen I'm guessing.

You don't seem to find disparaging comments about other teams/players from the KU or KSU beat writers on this blog. They use this forum as a place to discuss local college athletics in a rational manner. However, doesn't always seem to be the case for the MU guy. You could see where the discussion was going once he used the term "Manhappy".

The problem is you are a supposed journalist. I don't see journalism in this article, I only see a Mizzou fan. Sounds like you have a clinical case of beard envy!

If you're going to dog Pullen and predict what he may do in a similar situation, make sure and make a fair comparison.

Bowers dunk came with less than 2 seconds remaining, not 10. Big difference. There would be no issue with Bowers dunk with 10 seconds to go as a LOT can happen in 10 seconds. But in one or two seconds? Not so much.

Then again, God forbid you use logic and fair comparison when analyzing anything related to Mizzou.

The answer is yes. That's exactly what Pullen and other Cats have done this year. Most folks call that sportsmanship. Ever heard of that?

You pay this guy to write for you?

JFC, forget the Octagon of dumb, this is the Column of Dumb.
