Afterthoughts on Super Sunday
After Kansas won at Kansas State, I heard so many declarations of the Big 12 race being over I thought we might see an Appomattox or Versailles treaty signed soon with General Self, sitting across from Gen. Barnes and Gen. Martin with the other coaches standing behind.
I still won’t declare the race over, but if the Jayhawks don’t win the conference with a three-game lead at the halfway point, we’re looking a gag of epic proportions.
But don’t forget, the KU schedule is back-loaded. Four Big 12 trips, starting Monday at Texas, to teams that would be in the NCAA field if the season ended today, are all losable. The Jayhawks had only one of those road foes (K-State) in the first half of conference play.
TON OF BRICKS
When the game’s in motion, Texas is fine. When everybody pauses for a free throw, the Longhorns come apart.
Two years ago, Memphis overcame its free-throw woes largely because it took charity shots out of the equation by overwhelming opponents _ until the national title game.
Texas can’t win in the Big 12 by shooting 62.1 percent as a team, and 49 percent in the four losses since starting 17-0. They were an abysmal 10 for 27 in Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma.
WHEN SHOTS FALL
I’ve been on K-State’s Denis Clemente for much of this season, mostly for his shot selection. But when he’s right, the Wildcats are terrific. A pair of threes got it started, and successive steals and slam finishes by Jamar Samuels and Wally Judge early in the second half started the run that turned a deficit into double-digit lead at Iowa State.
NICE REBOUND
Winning basketball is played from the inside out. Not just rebounding, but dribble penetration and entry passes. Missouri forgot that against Texas A&M and got it back at Colorado.
RATING THE BIG 12
I have to do this on Monday, and at the moment I’m inclined to give the third spot _ after Kansas and Kansas State _ to Texas A&M.
According to collegerpi.com, the Big 12 has edged ahead of the Big East with a best RPI heading into Sunday’s games.
