UT's Old Man Shipley

By J. Brady McCollough - Posted on 29 July 2009

How old is Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley? Well, he's 23. But in college football years, he's Methuselah.

Shipley arrived in Austin in 2004, which means that he has now played with members of 10 Texas recruiting classes (guys from the class of 2000 would have been fifth-year seniors when Shipley was a freshman). Shipley has been connected to a decade of UT football.

The only way this is possible, of course, is through having some horrible luck. Shipley missed his first two seasons on campus with injuries and really didn't return to his 18-year-old form until last season, when he caught 89 passes for 1,060 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Now, he's six years older than some of his new teammates that arrived this summer.

"Sometimes, when you look around and realize that you're there with a whole different group of guys than you came in with, it's kind of a weird feeling," Shipley said. "It's been fun for me to be a part of several different groups of guys. It's funny. You forget what it was like to be the new kid coming in. Sometimes, I have to remind myself to talk to these guys and give them advice and stuff."

He may try to give them advice, but will they listen to their elder?

"They’re always laughing at me," Shipley said. "They ask me how old I am, and I tell them and they think that's hilarious. A lot of them are 17, 18 years old."
