Big 12 Below .500 in Bowls
The next time someone from the Big 12 brags about the success of the conference, show them this:
Since the inception of the Big 12 Conference, the leaque is 45-47 in bowl games.
Texas (8-4), Nebraska (7-4), Kansas (3-1) and Missouri (4-3)are the only teams with better than break-even records in bowl games under the Big 12 banner.
And take note. Three of those are from the North Division.
Texas A&M is the not so proud owner of a 1-7 bowl record under Big 12 play.
And you know what? You can expand the view to all-time bowl games for teams in the current Big 12 and it just doesn't look much better.
Oklahoma is 24-17-1 all-time in bowl games. Texas is 25-21-2. Nebraska is a mere 23-22 and no other team is above .500.
For the record, Kansas is 6-6 all-time, Kansas State is 6-7 and Missouri is 12-14.
Thanks to the Big 12 Conference for furnishing those statistics. Although I'm trying to figure out why the league office would try to publicize them.

So if Texas Tech beats up on a terrible Michigan St. team and Texas loses to a great Alabama team, what does that tell you? Nothing, if you simply look at the fact that Texas lost their bowl game and Texas Tech won their bowl game. Without context, this is meaningless...and so is this topic.
During the same time period the big ten bowl record is 40-48.
And you know what? You can expand the view to all time bowl records and it doesn't get much better.
Penn State who joined in the 90's has an overall record of 26-13-2 far and away the best. For the long standing members only Purdue at 8-7 and Iowa at 12-10-1 have winning records in bowl games for the vastly superior big ten.
A majority of the bowl games, esp. pre-Big 12 were not near Big 8 school campuses. Like the Big 10 now, the Big 8 schools were almost always the visitor in terms of distance from the bowl site. Not surprisingly, the team closer to home won (miami and FSU vs. Nebraska in Orange Bowl are good examples). Also, teams near bowls were often invited more often which, in part, explains why all the SEC schools have been to so many bowls. Ole Miss, especially. When in doubt the bowls invited nearby teams. It's this situation, with so many Texas-centric bowls, where the former Big 8 teams suffer in the current Big 12 set up. And why a Liberty or Music City bowl should replace one, such as the Insight or Sun, since they are closer to Missouri, and ISU, for example
