Of Mizzou Hoops and Football Recruits and Suh and Gill and Line Drive Singles

About the last thing most people were talking about Mizzou Arena on Saturday night was the ease with which Missouri dispatched Fairleigh (Easy) Dickinson.

Everyone expected it. They got it. Move on to other topics. Like the Dec. 23 game with Illinois in St. Louis looming as a revelation into whether this Missouri team is good and bound for the NCAA Tournament or just average and in danger of not making it.

But in topics of conversation, the men's hoops victory was just above gossip of how a couple of MU women's basketball players got themselves suspended and arrested for allegedly breaking the nose of an MU male cheerleader. Since then, this has become a he said, she said deal, so stay tuned.

Football was - and is - the big item.

First, Missouri has received three more football recruits in quarterback Tyler Gabbert, running back Marcus Murphy and juco safety Kenronte Walker.

Most folk around Mizzou figure wide receiver Curtis Carter is another week or so down the road. And don't be surprised if Carter wanting to play baseball as well is a selling point.

The big hope is that Liberty's Marcus Lucas - one of the best high school wide receivers in the nation - eventually picks Mizzou from a field that includes Stanford, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Even without Lucas, Missouri is building a heck of a class.

And with James Franklin and Tyler Gabbert in the fold, Missouri has successfully rolled the dice for one season with Blaine Gabbert the only proven QB on the roster.

Secondly, Nebraska's Man Named Suh finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting revealed Saturday night in New York.

More than a few MU fans noted that Missouri's Chase Daniel finished fourth in the voting his junior year.

More than more than a few MU fans - and some others at Mizzou Arena - took notice of Kansas having settled on Turner Gill as the man to replace Mark Mangino.

Not Jim Harbaugh. Not Houston Nutt. Not a lot of people is Turner Gill.

The bottom line summation of KU AD Lew Perkins' search from the Mizzou perspective:

Just hit a clean, line-drive single to the opposite field with two down in the bottom of the ninth and the pitcher coming to bat.

A year ago Gill would have looked more like an extra base hit. But now?

Bottom line, however. Most respect Gill's college playing pedigree at Nebraska and the character of the man.

Are you trying to say Daniel is as good a player as Suh? Suh finished with the most points ever for a 4th place finisher, which means he had more than Daniel. Daniel was just a product of a spread offense while Suh is an outstanding player who puts up his numbers because of how dominant he is, not as a result of the system he plays in.

But I've talked about Suh being such a dominant force, and IMO he should have won the Heisman. I argued with someone that said Pelini and NU put a DL in position to be a top 3 pick. I argued that Pelini or NU did nothing to produce a top 3 pick at the DL position. It was all Suh! They stated that once Pelini came in, he became such a better player and a less confused one. I understand that point, but I think it was Suh's youth that caused inconsistecy.

Also, Daniel was as good as they come as a system college QB. Suh is a better player in college than Daniel and Suh will be a much better pro.

I'm a diehard MU fan, btw.

I also think that Suh blossomed because he got older and matured but Pelini did have a lot to do with it too. Kevin Cosgrove and that staff were terrible at teaching players the fundamentals. Suh has said in interviews he learned things like proper pad level and how to use your hands as a D lineman that the previous coaches never taught. The old staff tried to bring in recruits with lots of stars next to their name and hoped they would just be good with no teaching. Pelini looks for players that have the desire to become good, whether they have the stars or not, and teaches them.

Daniel was a good QB in that system but, as a Husker fan, he came off as being a cocky d-bag. I'm glad Suh is humble.

KU is dominant and Kansas State is beating every ranked team they face and we have to suffer through updates regarding MU beating Farligh Dickinson?? Who cares, they lost to Oral Roberts, and they will struggle with UMKC. How about talking about the good teams in this town. God how boring.

Just a thought
