All-Big 12 RBs?

By Blair Kerkhoff - Posted on 24 November 2009

Looking at Big 12 stats this morning got me thinking about All-Big 12 teams that will be popping up starting next week, including The Star’s.

Who would be the two running backs? With a game remaining for most (two for Texas and Nebraska), these five would seem to be leaders.

Daniel Thomas, Kansas State

Keith Toston, Oklahoma State

Alexander Robinson, Iowa State

Roy Helu, Jr., Nebraska

Baron Batch, Texas Tech

Thomas leads the Big 12 in rushing at 105.4 yards per game. The Wildcats’ season is over, so he can’t add to the total, but he perhaps more than the others, is his team’s MVP.

Toston stepped in for injured starter Kendall Hunter early and has become the top rusher in Big 12 games (121.4). He’s been over 200 all-purpose yards three times this season.

Robinson’s average slipped under 100 yards per game in the Missouri loss but he has been the Cyclones’ offensive rock all season despite performing with a nagging groin injury.

Helu also has battled injuries, notably a shoulder problem, but has been the workhorse in the Cornhuskers’ offense. He averaged 96.1 of the teams’ 147.7 rushing yards.

Batch is the league’s eighth leading rusher at 65 yards per game (jumps to fifth in Big 12 games at 73.1) but he tops the Big 12 in yards per carry at 5.8 and rushing touchdowns with eight. In conference games he ranks among the league leaders in receptions and leads in touchdowns (nine).

I’d say Thomas is a first-team lock and Toston is a leader to join him but can be passed on the final weekend.

There is a HUGE gap between Toston and Thomas and the rest of the league. If you look at the whole year, then you possibly bring those other guys in.

It's the same on the WR side, Alexander and Briscoe are so far in front of the other WRs it isn't even close and I'm sure both will have HUGE days on Saturday. Shipley is the 5th WR in yardage for conference games, but I bet he gets consideration as a 1st team WR due to his early season success and preseason hype.

He is riding the wave of last year, plus being on the best team in the conference. Not saying it is right, but Alenxander and Shipley will be your first-team WR.

I am predicting Thomas and Helu snag the top RB's.
