Hey Husker Fans: Admission, Not an Apology

By Mike DeArmond - Posted on 17 November 2009

Let's get the most important thing out of the way right up front:

I ADMIT I was wrong to say that people picking Nebraska to win the Big 12 North were "abso-tooting-lutely nuts."

If Saturday's game goes as I expect - which should frighten Nebraska football fans no end - the Cornhuskers will beat Kansas State and win the North.

Now, and this is to those Cornhusker fans who have lately reminded me of my contention, this is in no way an APOLOGY.

I had good reasons to believe that Nebraska was being portrayed as better than it would be and much of my concerns have proven valid.

Nebraska has proven to be no better off at quarterback than Missouri. MU's Blaine Gabbert has passed for 2,662 yards and 20 touchdowns compared Zac Lee's 1,692 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Nebraska's three-headed running back stable wound up to be Roy Helu and Heloooo as one running back was kicked off the team and one proved inconsequential.

Is Helu having a better season than Missouri's Derrick Washington? Yes, yes, by 332 yards, 962 to 630. So again, I was wrong. But I will not apologize for an expectation derailed by the erroneous decision by the Missouri coaching staff to ignore the running game for most of the season.

What I will admit is Nebraska's defense - not just Mr. Suh - is much better than I ever dreamed it could be. Bo Pelini is indeed a defensive genius.

But I contend the course of Missouri's entire season was altered, for the worse, when Suh inadvertently rolled up on Gabbert's ankle.

Had that not happened, I contend Missouri might well have had the ability to pile up more than a 12-0 lead in the monsoon that was Nebraska's 27-12 victory at Mizzou.

I see no need to apologize for what happened at Kansas, either. The Jayhawks may not have been good enough to fulfill my prediction of a North Division title. But no one could have predicted - and likely still cannot explain - how Kansas has collapsed in Big 12 play.

What does all this have to do with the satisfaction Nebraska fans should feel when the Cornhuskers win the North Division title?

Not a darned thing. Enjoy the ride.

I just am not going to APOLOGIZE for picking against a Nebraska team that - like every other team in the North - is flawed.

How else can you explain the mighty Cornhuskers losing at home to Iowa State 9-7 with all those turnovers?

So hang in there Nebraska fans. You're just going to have to settle for an ADMISSION that I was wrong.

You don't need to apologize for making your prediction, but how about instead of trying rationalize WHY you were wrong, you actually just admit that Nebraska is the better team, and leave it at that. In a head to head matchup, Nebraska proved that.

Oh and as for the, "If Suh hadn't hurt Gabbert on that one play, Missouri's season would have been completely different" nonsense.......

If you really want to play that game:

If Gabbert had actually stuck to his commitment and stayed with Nebraska, we would have beaten you by more

If God hadn't decided to make it rain that night, our offense wouldn't have struggled so much

If we had just turned the ball over 7 times against Iowa State, we would have won

And on, and on, and on.

Of course Nebraska is flawed, every team in the Big 12 with the possible exception of Texas is deeply flawed. No one claimed Nebraska was the perfect team, but they PROVED they are better than Missouri.

You wanna bring up Iowa State? Missouri gave Baylor their only conference win! At least the Cyclones beat two other conference teams. Baylor has scored 40 points exactly once against an FBS school this season. Guess which team they did that against?

Oh and by the way, Derrick Washington is NOT better than Roy Helu. Ask every Big 12 coach which running back they'd actually want more, 11 of them will say Helu.

Instead of a snarky, rationalization, you could have been classy, and said "boy did I call that one wrong" but apparently class isn't a strong suit with you.

apology accepted.

You get it!
