Live from Mizzou Arena: Nixon Pardons Dixon

By Mike DeArmond - Posted on 23 October 2009

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon - needing true freshman Michael Dixon to run the point for the team Nixon was coaching in Missouri's Black & Gold Basketball Scrimmage - exercised executive privilege.

Dixon fouled out with 1.1 seconds left in the first half. But Nixon "pardoned" Dixon, who went on to score 22 points in his college debut. With six fouls.

Eleven of Dixon's points came after he had "fouled out". And that, along with Kimmie English's 32 points, boosted the Black squad to a 91-82 victory before a crowd of 5,324 at Mizzou Arena.

Missouri has reinvented, if not the wheel, then the game of college basketball.

Yes, Michael Dixon fouled out with 1.1 seconds left in the first half. But he has been allowed to play on in the second half.

And currently, with six fouls, the true freshman out of Lee's Summit West has 20 points. Nine of those points have come after the point Dixon fouled out with 1.1 seconds left in the first half of Missouri's Black & Gold Scrimmage.

In case you didn't know, five is the maximum number of fouls allowed in college, high school, middle school and grade school basketball.

Heck, Dixon would have fouled out of an NBA game, which they tell me has a limit of six fouls.

With 3:38 left the Black squad led 82-72.ll five players on the floor for the gold team had already scored in double figures.
Kimmie English had 29 points for the gold team and Zaire Taylor 17.

A
Hey, it is a scrimmage.

(Previous first half posts)

Black squad is settling for outside shots and has built a 55-46 lead. Wait, a steal by Zaire Taylor and a dunk.

We'll keep it here for the halftime score. But first, Dixon fouls out with 1.1 seconds left, trying to stop a J.T. Tiller drive.

Tiller sinks one of two free throws. Gold leads at half 58-50.

Liked half of Dixon's game with 11 points. But unless they allow a do-over, the freshman from KC is out for the second half.

Gotta be smarter than that, kiddo.

Scoring leader for the Black is Kimmie English with 18. Zaire Taylor has 10.

For the gold, Tiller has 11 points. Paul went to the break with 15 points, having hit five of six shots.

Black team hit 61.1 percent in the first half, Gold 63.6 percent.

OUCH!Michael Dixon picks up his fourth foul with 2:03 left in the first half, hacking Jarret Sutton on a deep jumper in the corner.

Hey Jay! Pull Dixon before he fouls out. Unless you have a deal with the refs.

Marcus Denmon hits two free throws to give the Gold its first lead at 44-42.

Kim English hits from the key for his 16th point.

Denmon says to heck with this.

A three and gold on top 47-46.

Dixon is read to play as a true freshman. He has 11 points, but three fouls.

Miguel Paul is on fire! A threeeeeee! He has 15 points now and the game is tied at 42-42 with 3:53 left in the first half.

ANOTHER WOW. BOWERS AGAIN. EASY SLAM

English now has 14. That's not a little English. That's a lot of English.

(previous)
Time out at 6:38. Paul has 10 for the gold and English hits a three and has 10 for the black, which leads 36-30

Kimmie hits a three and the PA announcer tries out a new catch phrase.

"A little English!!!!"

Liked it once. Don't know if I want to hear it every time. Yes I do too know. And the consensus on press row is that we don't.

Dixon now has nine points, Taylor eight and English seven for the black.

Paul, of all people, leads the gold squad with eight points.

Time out at 7:25 of first half and Black leads 33-28.

Mike Anderson comes over to the Black bench. Tell him to take a hike, Gov.

FIRST WOW OF THE EVENING!!!!!

Miguel Paul throws the ball to the rim and Laurence Bowers turns that into a flying slam!!!!!!!!!!

I wanted to see more of Bowers last year. That whets the appetite for more.

(previous) Remember the debut of Marcus Denmon in this game a year ago? Michael Dixon may be on the way to a nice debut as well. He just hit a three and has seven points.

There's some defense. Kimmie English a steal and layup. What? No slam?

Dixon hits again and black leads 17-8.

At 13:03 Laurence Bowers and Steve Moore check in.

Moore immediately works inside for a bucket and at 12:40 a steal leads to a slam by Keith Ramsey, giving the black squad a 21-11 lead.

Time at 15:50 and the Black leads 11-8, Zaire Taylor with five points.

Haven't seen all that much defense so far. Fire honorary coaches Gov. Jay Nixon and school systems president Gary Forsee!!!!!

Marcus Denmon layup for the gold and Miguel Paul follows, cutting the Black lead to 6-4.

Mike Dixon hits his first shot as a Tiger, a mid-range two to give the black team a 2-0 lead.

Turnover for the gold and ZaireTaylor hits a layup for the black.

Miss for the gold and Keith Ramsey a layup for 6-0 black lead.

(We'll update on the top throughout the game)

Passing out Elite Eight Rings - also known as Big 12 Tournament Championship Rings.

I don't know what they're calling them. But there is some hardware.

15 minutes until tipoff of Missouri's Black & Gold Scrimmage. A small crowd on hand, somewhere between a gathering for MU women's hoops and a crowd for an exhibition against Central Missouri.

Hey, there are House Decorations to see. And the bars and restaurants are full of people arriving in plenty of time for the Homecoming football game against Texas here at 7 p.m. Saturday.

We'll keep you updated on Campus Corner on the hoops scrimmage and of course wrap it up in Saturday morning's print edition.
