The Second Guess: Yost's Call on Fourth and One at OSU

Missouri offensive coordinator David Yost admitted Monday he would probably not call the long pass play he did with Missouri facing fourth and one deep in Oklahoma State territory on Saturday night.

But not for running an play with no runner in the backfield with quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

“Actually, I second guessed it for a couple of different throws as opposed to the one we called,” Yost said. “We talked about it. The fourth and three we tried later, we had a back back there, and we didn’t execute properly to get the first (down).

“I second guessed all of them because I hate plays not working.”

I second guessed the fourth and one because when you only need one yard and you don't have a back in the backfield with an obviously sore-ankled quarterback, you're telegraphing a pass that is harder to complete when the other team knows you won't run.

Oh, and then I second guessed it for another reason. You needed one yard. Run it. Fourth and one is different from fourth and three.
