Tim Grunhard to join KU's staff as OL coach, Ron Powlus to be QB coach

By J. Brady McCollough - Posted on 13 December 2011

Kansas football coach Charlie Weis announced Tuesday that Bishop Miege coach Tim Grunhard will join the Jayhawks' staff as offensive line coach effective Jan. 1.

Grunhard, a former Chiefs' offensive lineman, led the Stags to five-straight district titles and the 2009 Class 4A state title.

Grunhard, like Weis, is a Notre Dame graduate. Grunhard played for the Fighting Irish's 1988 national championship team.

On Tuesday Weis also announced that Ron Powlus, a former Notre Dame and current Akron quarterbacks coach, will be KU's quarterbacks coach.

Powlus worked under Weis for three seasons at Notre Dame and coached former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

He couldn't beat Blue Valley High School, how do you think he will do in
the Big 12?

I was joking when I said KU should just hire TG as head coach. How funny. I know Miege will miss Tim, but he has done about all he can there, including a state title. On to new things. Credit to him for sticking around the KC area. He's done great at coaching so far, and could become a greater asset to the KC area.

He deserves better!? It's not like he's being forced to do anything. He wanted to do this! What don't you get about that! And who knows if Weis is a failed coach yet. If you told Grunny to his face that this is a bad move and he would deserve better, I don't want to know what he would do. You are so uneducated about this.

You idiot, you make it sound like Grunhard didn't have a choice at what he was doing. Keep in mind that Tim CHOSE to go to KU, nobody forced him. Time will tell if that was a good decision or not, but only Tim will know, not some anonymous poser (you)on an internet talk board.

Pretty uneducated comment. If you listened to Grunny you would know the only three jobs he would take our Miege,KU,or the Chiefs. He wants to be close to home. Also he loves Weis and has tremendous respect for him. I don't think he is looking to be a college coach at all anytime soon, he knows what he's doing.

That is exactly what everyone at Iowa told Bill Snyder a while back. An Iowa newspaper said that he was taking over the worst program in the history of the NCAA and that he would never be heard from again. Man it sounded as absolutely stupid then as it does now.

Grunny already has had a "big time career" you idiot. If he never coaches another game he has done enough in football to last most people for a lifetime.

today? I am not from KC and have never heard of him and I follow the NFL pretty closely.

I was not alone in needing to look up who he was. I heard that from several others as well.

Different because Snyder had been coaching for 27 years at that point. The first 12 in HS and the next 15 of those were in college.

The other difference in "exactly the same" was he left Iowa to be the head coach not the O Line coach.

Comparing what Snyder took on to what "Grunny" is jumping into is what is stupid.

Nobody even knew Bill Snyder existed outside of St. Joe, MO and Iowa when he took the KSU job, and what does Bill Snyder have to do with Tim Grunhard taking a job at KU as an assistant?

Grunny's career has been as an NFL player and a high school coach, not a college coach. I don't care where he would prefer to work, and I don't care how much he respects Weis. Weis failed miserably at ND and won't fair much better at KU. Grunny deserves better and doesn't need to be tagged with being involved with another failed football coach at KU.

he "failed miserably" at ND? That's debatable. He certainly wasn't a raving success. But they haven't done that great since he left. And they hadn't done much better than he did for several years prior. Bottom line, if he comes to KU, has the same record and goes the 3 bowls in 5 years, they'll name a building after him. Expectations are different.

winning % all time.

Was looking at status thru 2005 and thought he ranked better

My point was people in IOWA, who did know who he was, said the same thing about him that you are saying about Grunny. Just because you are a fairly bias KState fan who blasts Ku at every opportunity doesn't mean I think you know a thing about college football or what is important to a guy that has done as much as Grunny has in football. You don't have any idea at all what chance they have to be successful there. By the way, if KState wins every game they play against KU for the next 25 years or so, they will about be .500 against them.

I could care less what the overall record is. Since 1989 KSU is 16-7 against KU. KU fired the best coach they ever had who came from where...... the Bill Snyder family tree. It will be hilarious when Weis rides off into the sunset back to Florida to be with his wife and daughter with a bag full of KU's boosters money and he will care less what he did while he was at KU.

K-State fan thinks everything KU does is stupid. Wow go figure. Who cares what you think?

Mangino was a recruiting guy at K-State and never coached on the field or in the booth for Snyder. He never coached a position or ever got on the field. He left because of that and took all his recruiting info with him which infuriated Snyder. He wasn't on the "tree" he was under the tree. Get your facts straight before you blow him up even bigger than he is.

Or it could be amazingly interesting if he does what Snyder has failed to do, and not only win a few games, but build a program that can survive AFTER he leaves, which is what I think he's really here to do. If he comes in, hires good coaches around him and leaves the program stronger, he's done a great service. Mangino left the program in tatters.

And let's not forget, Grunny is the Off line coach. Who in the world could name one other O line coach in the Big 12 now? Name ONE! If it wasn't someone as high-profile in KC as Grunny, this wouldn't even be a topic of discussion.

...then please do so.

I would rather look at the games in my lifetime i.e. the 90s to present and am happy w/ the results. If that isnt enough, my dad can beat up your dad for the next 25 years. lol

Your lifetime is certainly the only one that counts so I guess that is understandable.

Seriously? This will be the worst decision Grunhard has ever made. Weis will ruin any chance Grunhard has of having a big time college coaching career.

Or he might propel him into big-time coaching. Everyone starts somewhere. It's obvious you hate Weis, but who cares. He's the coach with or without your consent. And Grunny made it clear on 810 he likes Weiss and almost went to work with him before at ND. I'd trust his assessment more than yours. He's a proven winner.
