Red River rivalry seeps into Big 12 expansion talks
UPDATED WITH WEST VIRGINIA SENATOR QUOTES
Has Big 12 expansion become part of the Red River Rivalry?
According to a source familiar with the Big 12 Board of Directors teleconference on Tuesday, Texas and Oklahoma aren’t on the same page in expansion, if the league is to take only one school.
West Virginia is preferred by Texas. Louisville is favored by Oklahoma, said the source.
Who wins this battle? In the Cotton Bowl earlier this month, the Sooners prevailed.
But nobody knows how this one plays out. Perhaps the Big 12 invites both.
Assuming Missouri is headed to the SEC, could the Big 12 stand at 11? The Big Ten ran that sized conference for two decades.
And if Notre Dame brings basketball and its non-revenue sports, the league is back to its original 12-team alignment for all sports except football.
If the Irish believe conference affiliation is in their future, Big 12 football could grow to 12 and return to division play.
Or that could happen with this round of expansion if West Virginia, Louisville and a third team is added.
Cincinnati has been speculated as a possibility, but others in the Big East - South Florida, Rutgers and Connecticut - will be looking for conference upgrades.
Brigham Young, a football independent, has often been suggested as a candidate, but the school’s contract with ESPN might not work in the Big 12, according to a source.
WEST VIRGINIA SENATORS WEIGH IN
West Virginia senators Jay Rockerfeller and Joe Manchin issued statements on Wednesday, and they're not happy campers.
Manchin suggests that Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell reached out to Oklahoma President David Boren to lobby for Louisville, that may have caused the West Virginia to Big 12 delay.
Rockerfeller: "The Big 12 picked WVU on the strength of its program — period. Now the media reports that political games may upend that. That’s just flat wrong. I am doing and will do whatever it takes to get us back to the merits.”
Manchin: "If a U.S. Senator has done anything inappropriate or unethical to interfere with a decision that the Big 12 had already made then I believe that there should be an investigation in the U.S. Senate and I will fight to get the truth. West Virginians and the American people deserve to know exactly what is going on and whether politics is interfering with our college sports."

ND would be a perfect fit for the Big Bevo's(12). Their oversized ego would fit in well with OU and Bevo. KU and Kstate should be begging for someone to take them out of this clown show.
And Jayhawk and Wildcat fans wonder why Mizzou and A&M want out. Not to mention Nebraska and Colorado.
if you don't think that lsu, alabama and florida don't run the sec the same way oklahoma and texas run the big 12 your kidding yourself. the sunshine network gave florida 100mil to replay their games on sundays. its a third tier deal same as texas florida keeps all that money. when are you going to start whining and crying about that. not having to listen to missouri bitch about how unfair it is in the big 12 is improving the conference.
I am a life long SEC fan in Tennessee, and if you think the SEC is as dysfunctional as the Big 12, then why have four of your schools left in the last 2 years and the SEC just keeps getting bigger and stronger. If it makes you feel better to tell yourself that, then keep doing it. Remember this conversation when the SEC combines its tier three rights under a SEC network and brings in even more money.
your just as lost as a missouri fan you claim everyone is equal in the sec thats a joke. florida will never split that money and you know they won't. the same problem in the big 12 will happen in the sec greed florida will fight to the end to keep the rights to their games just like texas. the greed for more money is killing college sports if you think the great and powerful sec won't encounter the same problems think again. you have no buyout clause now if and when missouri comes in thats the first thing thats going to change real quick. the sec is not immune to the greed for more money when the big 8 expanded to the big 12 thats when all the problems started you need to remember that.
Whose your daddy now, Farrah? What a great way to treat your newest member - by reminding them of just how dysfunctional the Big 12 is. Where are all those other little members? Same place they have always been sitting on the sidelines to scared to do anything about it.
kansas has a third tier network thats why all of are basketball games are on tv in kansas city. same as florida and texas. nobody else in the sec or big 12 has third tier rights but those three. thats why ku says nothing about texas and their network why would they rock the boat. the second biggest city in MISSOURI shows everyone of your biggest rivals basketball games on tv. if it wasn't for the phillips 66 big 12 network saturday games you would never be on tv in your own state.
Really? The great and all powerful Jayhawk TV network has caused KU to choke on their tongue? What you don't get is that BB doesn't matter in conference alignment discussions. KU BB is irrelevant in that regard. Here's a tidbit for you... .401 - that is KU's all time winning % in FB for the last 100+ years and the team KU played the best against? MU! Although you are still below .500 even against them. So Farrah take a chill pill and wait for BB season then you and the Jayhawk nation can really rock on.
in the end you will lose the kansas city area iowa state, ksu and ku will profit from your foolish move. recruiting in kc is going to be so easy when your gone. if you have ever played any sport than you know how good it feels to turn around and see your parents in the stands. not everyone can afford to buy plane tickets plus rent a car maybe a night or two in a hotel thats alot of cash. or stay at home and go to a local school within driving distance thanks for giving us kansas city.
Mizzou will not "lose" the KCMO area unless a concerted effort is made by the media (print, TV, Cable, etc.) to completely ignore or negatively cover MU.
You see, regardless of how hard you try to place KCMO in Kansas, it is and will always be in Missouri. MU and Missourians will make absolutely sure KCMO knows who their major state university and university system ,is University of Missouri.
Thats just the way it is ...
in the end whether you like it or not you will lose KANSAS city once again without playing ksu or ku you will never sellout sprint center or arrowhead. holiday basketball tourney will be a joke you don't even sellout your own arena unless your playing ku. no team will waste a non-conference home game to play you at arrowhead so you have lost the football game before it even started dream on about nebraska. it will take about 5yrs in the sec before you see what a huge mistake this all is like i said thanks for giving us KANSAS city.
No idea why we would want to leave. The Big 12 is the definition of stability.
For those that attended kU, that was sarcasm.
Again,Texas rules the roost in the Big12. It will be West Virginia if Texas wants them. The others will vote w/Texas. We all know KU will vote with Texas or Texas may allow Mizzou out w/a lower exit fee. The Pac12 showed OU that it IS Texas with the mojo. I understand that Senators are in on this suddenly. McConnell of Kentucky pushing Boren for Louisville. Texas wins this one. If they don't there may actually be hope for the Big12 IF Texas accepts losing this vote.
So what if Oklahoma and Texas aren't on the same page in expansion? There are many other Big 12 members that also have an opinion, and they should have some say in the matter.
If Texas and five other schools, for example, want West Virgina, while Oklahoma and one other school want Louisville, the choice should be obvious. It doesn't matter if OU and UT have differing opinions because some of the other schools may also disagree with one another. That's bound to happen whenever two or more parties get together.
THERE WILL BE A VOTE...AND THE "OTHER FIVE" YOU MENTION WILL NOT NECESSARILY KISS UT'S A$$.....SEVERAL OF THE SCHOOLS ARE OKAY WITH "TAKIN'EM BOTH"!!!....IF NOTRE DAME TAKES A NON FOOTBALL AFFILIATION, IT WON'T BE THAT LONG BEFORE IT TAKES A FOOTBALL AFFILIATION....AND FOR THE AVERAGE AMERICAN FOOTBALL FAN, ANY CONNECTION WITH NOTRE DAME AUTOMATICALLY GIVE THE BIG 12 CREDIBILITY...
None of the other five have ever taken on the big 2, UT & OU. They never will as they are just too afraid. Just call'em what they are - UT/OU's bi*^ches. Oh and ND will never join the Big 12 as a football team. They will go Big 10 when they feel they have to.
It may not seem fair but reality is OU and Tx votes matter. Not so much with the other schools.
Alabama will decide where MU fits in the SEC.
