If Border War ends, who is to blame?
Last night, feeling particularly snarky, I decided to have a little fun on Twitter and Facebook.
Playing off the notion that a possible Missouri move from the Big 12 Conference to the Southeastern Conference could bring an end to the Missouri-Kansas Border War rivalry in football and basketball, I asked the following question:
“If Mizzou goes to SEC and Kansas refuses to play MU, who is really to blame for ending Border War rivalry? Answer in 3-2-1”
Now some survey specialist would undoubtedly say that I could have phrased the question better.
But I’ve never claimed to be a survey specialist. In fact, my general response to having a survey foisted upon me is: Why do you give a hoot what I think? It isn’t going to change anything.
Be that as it may – and taking the entire experiment as a bit of whimsy – here are the responses I received via Twitter and my Facebook page. I’ve simply cut and pasted the responses, without correction for spelling, punctuation, capitalization. And there are some answers I received that don’t even try to answer the original question. Hey, it is the Internet folks:
“mu,mu,mu,mu,mu,texas,ku”
“MU to the SEC; if I were KU, I wouldn't give time of day. You make your own bed. Simple. And I WENT to MU. Bye.”
“Big XII tourney in kc not guaranteed thru 2014. So kc loses the tourney every 3 years once Dallas & OKC join rotation”
“Mizzou”
“I have no doubt #Mizzou would love to continue the football game.”
“Who is to blame for Texas not playing A&M?”
“Mizzou. Why is this hard to grasp? Wanna play two neutral site non-cons? And Louisville replaces MU hoops on KU's sked. Done.”
“What if Big12 agreed to play Big12 title game in KC, MO every year? You don't think Neinas & univ. pres offered that?”
“Missouri Governor started all of this movement by reacting to Delaney's comments 18 months ago. Enjoy the SEC.”
“Hilarious.”
“If Mizzou goes to SEC....therein lies the answer to your question. Don't get cake and get to eat it too”
“if the rivalry dies, it's kUs fault. If they wanna be petty about their rival getting a better situation thats their choice not ours”
“Missouri will be the only one to blame for the death of their mediocre football program”
“That's what Non-conference games r for! It'd be on kU”
“The answer is the pussycats running from the Big 12!! Stability is happening.”
“Answer is MU.”
“Missouri. Last time I checked, Kansas wasn't leaving. Don't see anyone playing Nebraska when they left. Kansas has KSU any how”
“Just bc Mizzou leaves doesn't mean the Big 12 has to pull the tourny out of KC.”
“Only mizzou will fault kansas. Everybody else will fault mizzou. Live with it.”
“I agree, this is about what's best for MU not KC”
“Easy. The team refusing to play.”
“TEXAS. TEXAS. TEXAS.”
“the Border War will just shift south, forget KU”
“Mizzou would be the one to end the border war by fleeing to avoid battle in a very cowardly and shortsighted manner. If you go ya go”
“If mu goes to sec and kc loses big 12 tourney who is really responsible for hurting kc economy? Answer in 3,2,1”
“TEXAS!!!!”
“If they refuse to play us, then they're the ones ending the series. I'd actually enjoy ending it though. They're irrelevant.”
“It's not that they'll refuse, it's just that their schedule is full until 2018. That 6 year deal w/Drake has a nasty buyout clause.”
“If Missouri is willing to make schedule accommodations I blame Kansas.”
“The Longhorn Network!”
“why ask stupid questions????”
“Mizzou”
“KU of course..........”
“Most of the worlds ills are the fault of Kansas.
ku, of course. If we are still willing to play, and they aren't, well, then, where does the fault lie? In Lawrence”
“Ku does not want anymore. Run away!!!”
“It's Kevin Kietzman's fault!”

If KU is refusing to negotiate due to "hard feelings", no doubt it is their fault. ISU plays Iowa every year, and most years they get their buts whooped. But they keep playing to uphold the tradition. Yes, it will send their schedule diffuculty through the roof (... the real reason they would baulk), but I don't buy this hard feelings crap.
Stupid question.
MU does not have a national presence. Neither does KU or KSU. A national audience is only interested in Texas, OU, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, USC, etc. National audiences don't turn on the TV and say...oh look, MU is playing. MU's relevance is entirely regional, and their new region is the Southeast.
As a KSU grad, I enjoyed the Border War immensely because it had relevance to the Midwest and Big XII conference. Now that MU is a Southeastern University, they are no longer relevant to the Midwest or KC. Arrowhead or Sprint Center??? Heck, try Avila in terms of level of interest.
This isn't personal. I don't watch Arkansas, unless they are playing in the SEC championship game against Georgia, Alabama, Florida, LSU. Why should I follow MU?
MU...move on, already. KC is all about the Chiefs, Royals, Sporting KC, KU and KSU. If anything, I look forward to shifting focus to our professional franchises going forward.
The blame goes to the Bi2 conference commissioner, and the Bi2 board.
When Texas came out with Bevo TV, the board should've put an end to that, before it got started, keeping everything even and fare for the entire conference. However, the entire board allowed Texas to do their own thing and make the rules, taking what they want. Colorado and Nebraska, saw right through that and said, we're out! Now one year later, Texas A&M, and Missouri sees the light, and 1/4 of the conference is gone! ...Thanks Dan Beebe, for being the Texas puppet! Thanks Bi2 board, for just looking the other way because, NO ONE ELSE has a way out of the Bi2 except for Missouri.
If ANY of the Bi2 conference cared about the conference as a whole, they would have stood up to Texas for the STABILITY of the conference (institution), to assure the security and integrity of the league.
If the Bi2 board would have peeked into the future, we would be watching the Big XII Network by now!!
Big XII hung itself!! ...MIZZOU 2 SEC!!!
Is Mike's code word for feeling tipsy..... again.
missery already played a Big 12 champ game, against OU, and there were over 5,000 unsold seats!!
See no reason why the series couldn't still continue and still hold meaning, OU/Texas played every year when they were not in the same conference.
As a lifelong MU fan I can say that if we do go to the SEC I wouldn't have any desire at all to continue playing ku in any sport.
That part of history would be over, the blame could be given to every member of the big 8 who invited Texas to join in first place.
I have grown tired of always playing the same teams all the time.Time for something new and fresh...
