Pinkel levels another blast at Big 12

By Mike DeArmond - Posted on 21 September 2011

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel on Wednesday morning warned the Big 12 Conference may not yet be safe from implosion because the league still has not fixed the inequities that have undermined it.

“We have problems in our league and we all know what most of them are. But we don’t solve them,” Pinkel said Wednesday morning in an interview on KFNS radio in St. Louis.

“We’ve lost three really good members in a year and a half and we think we’d maybe wake up and try to fix the problems so that we could have a great league.

“Because until the problems are fixed this stuff’s going to be happening. In my opinion, it’s going to go on and on and on and it’s not a whole lot of fun to be part of it.”

Pinkel has been critical of the way the Big 12 Conference has been doing business before, particularly at the Big 12 pre-season media gathering in Dallas.

On Monday during his weekly media gathering in Columbia, Pinkel brushed aside that subject, saying he did not want to comment further.

But Pinkel, on Wednesday, let loose his tongue from between clenched teeth, the day after The Star and The Birmingham News both reported the existence of an offer from the Southeastern Conference for Missouri to join the SEC if the Big 12 broke apart.

Could Pinkel's
The SEC was in denial over both reports, and MU official Chad Moller told The Star that MU’s response was that it had received no offer from another conference.

Pinkel did not address that issue, but did not pull punches about his dissatisfaction with the Big 12.

“There’s no other league in the nation that’s dealing with this kind of stuff,” Pinkel said, a day after Texas A&M officials said A&M was steadfast in its intention to leave the Big 12, just as Nebraska and Colorado did last year.

“Obviously we have problems in our league and we don’t fix them,” Pinkel said. “It’s embarrassing. It’s sad because it has, it had, such great potential.”

Does that mean the Pac 12 Conference’s announcement late Tuesday night that it would not expand further does not give real hope that the Big 12 has averted extinction for a second straight year?

Pinkel suggested that everything could change by next week.

“What I’m saying is you never know,” Pinkel said.

“This thing has been over like four times. Last year the whole thing was going to change. I don’t know what’s going to happen.

“Next year is it going to start brewing up again? I don’t know. It’s unbelievable.”

If Mizzou has an opportunity to go to the SEC it should take it.
Whatever is being discussed for the Big 12 will still result in the conference being "Big Tex and the Punks" with Texas allowing OU to be the senior punk. This will never work long term.
Mizzou does not have to be defensive about it programs. They have come along.
If Mizzou stays committed to improving all it programs there is absolutely no reason it cannot be very competitive in the SEC or anywhere else. Staying hurts the Tiger brand. Leaving is a clean break with tremendous opportunities to create crazy excitement and forever improve the brand. It is hard to feel pride for just another punk.

Otherwise we will be going through this crap every year. Think of the students and the fans!

Coach. Thanks for saying what we're all thinking and blogging. I hope Mr. Deaton listens to his head football coach. Let's get the heck out of Dodge and following Texas AM to the SEC so we can get on with a fair and stable conference. I've had it with TX and OU. It sounds like Coach Pinkel has too.

Misery's not going anywhere. 1st you wanted to go to the big 'leven, but they never asked. Now you want to go to the SEC, but they've not asked. Personally, the rest of us hope you get out of Dodge, too. We're tired of your whining...

Dear Kansas fan,
You spelled winning wrong.

Guess it really doesn't matter to you if Mizzou leaves now that KU and K-State have OU's and UT's tits back to suck-on. They should be safe now right?

Missouri football record against SEC schools: 20-8-1 Winning record against all schools except Kentucky (1-2) and Georgia (0-1).

There is an old Wu Tang Clan song: C.R.E.A.M(Cash Rules Everything Around Me) C.R.E.A.M get the money...dolla dolla bill ya'll!

Like Jim Boeheim said the other day, this all boils down to football and more specifically money...Texas being the "great" state it is, wants the lions share of the pie and not share with the other schools.

As an MU fanatic, this will only continue. Go to the SEC if there is interest. Texas and Oklahoma, as well as the other conferences are ONLY playing for time! It is time to do what is best for Missouri ...

Thank You Coach Pinkel! This K-State fan appreciates your candor!

This conference is a train wreck. Everyone but Texas and Oklahoma have every reason to find the nearest exit. It is a shame to consider the possibility of MU, KU, and KSU going separate ways, but the current arrangement is tragic.
