Painter may top Mizzou's list
NOTE: Click here for an updated story related to this post.
Purdue coach Matt Painter may top the list of candidates Missouri will seek out to replace Mike Anderson as the Tigers' next basketball coach.
That is according to a source with knowledge of the search process.
Lower down on that list could be another coach with Purdue ties, Missouri State coach Cuonzo Martin.
But Martin and Missouri State have released a statement that said:
“Nobody from Missouri has contacted me or my agent, so anything connecting me to that position at this point is simply a rumor. My priorities continue to be with Missouri State and building a championship program here.”
Although a call was placed to Martin on Friday afternoon to obtain his reaction, Martin was not immediately available. His earlier statement noted that he would not be available for further comment on the Missouri situation.
Missouri has issued a similar statement, saying that neither Alden nor members of the MU search committee nor current MU players would be commenting further until after Missouri had named its new head coach.
Painter did not immediately return a message left at his office. Tom Schott –assistant athletics director for communications – told The Star there had been no discussion regarding interest from Missouri in Painter.
Painter had driven Purdue to two straight Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament but was denied a third straight on Sunday in falling as an upset victim to VCU 94-76. Purdue finished the season at 26-8.
Schott confirmed that Painter has a $750,000 buyout in his contract with Purdue but that the buyout penalty goes away after July 1 of this year. That, of course, would be a savings on which Missouri could not likely wait.
Published reports list Painter’s salary at Purdue at between $1.3 and $1.5 million a year, depending upon incentives.
Missouri offered Anderson a contract renegotiation of $2 million a year for seven years, an offer that was withdrawn in return for MU giving permission for Anderson to talk about – and of course later take – the Arkansas job.
Anderson – or Arkansas – owe Missouri $550,000 as a penalty for his breaking his contract with Mizzou.

Read this article from the Purdue local newspaper. Trust me, Painter is not going anywhere. He's building that program and has an $80 million dollar Mackey Arena renovation coming next year to help recruiting. Sorry Mizzou fans, it is not an upgrade to go from Purdue to Mizzou ... at least right now.

only one argument is in Purdue's favor. It's his alma mater and while that's a large one, Purdue is notorious for underpaying their coaches. Many in West Lafayette believe they could give up Painter, hire Cuonzo Martin for much less, and not lose a step. Oh yeah, and that 80 million reno doesn't hold a candle to Mizzou's facilities.
I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but why wait on a $80 million renovation to an aging arena when you can move to a program with a $125 million arena that's only 7 years old?
And local articles about "building a program" don't mean a thing. The Star itself ran the same kind of articles about Mike Anderson mere months ago. Some coaches are motivated by prestige, in which case Purdue and Mizzou are equal. Some are motivated by money, in which case Mizzou has the advantage. Some are motivated by hometown roots, in which case Purdue has the advantage.
In summary, it's too early to say Mizzou has no chance at Painter.
I am not excited about Matt Painter at all. Does Mike Aldren really believe Matt Painter can build a team that can regularly compete against Kansas? Look at the Rivals website and his recruiting prowess is suspect. He landed a great class in 2007 w/ Hummel, Moore and Johnson but those are all Indiana guys. In fact, it seems like Indiana guys are about all he ever gets. Those guys are not going to come to Missouri. This would be a total lackluster pick. If Missouri is shooting for somebody like Bruce Weber (i.e., 20 or so wins, regularly in the tournament but will miss out every now and then, average recruiting), then Painter is probably the guy. I think they should shoot a little higher personally though.
Begs to differ with it being "Ugh."
He hasn't recruited out of Indiana, Illinois or Ohio because he hasn't had to. There is plenty of talent in that region. He has ties to SIU and the STL area. As well as being in good standing in KC - from what I've read. The guy wins. You cannot fault that. To compete with kU, in my opinion, you need a more traditional defensive coach. UHHHHH Gene Keady's product Matt Painter would be a damn fine start!!
