For the KU football diehards ... a depth chart or something like it

By J. Brady McCollough - Posted on 11 August 2009

Please, please, please don't hold onto this post and say, after KU's opener on Sept. 5 against Northern Colorado, that I was all wrong about who is going to play and that I deserve egg all over my face. Please!

But, from a 2-hour practice during which KU coach Mark Mangino very likely could have mixed up his lineups to fool the media, this is what I took away:

QB: After Todd Reesing, it appears that redshirt freshman Kale PIck is getting most of the work. Pick didn't make any throws that jumped out to me as brilliant, but he showed some moxie (that's a Reesing-like quality) with his ability to run. Still, Kerry Meier took plenty of reps behind center. True freshmen Jordan Webb and Christian Matthews were used sparingly.

RB: After Jake Sharp, it was mostly Rell Lewis and some spurts of true freshman Toben Opurum. Opurum is big and definitely seems the likely choice for short yardage situations, but it remains to be seen if he has the power to get tough yards. He struggled a few times trying to catch the ball out of the backfield. Transfer Daniel Porter had a few decent runs, as did true freshman Deshaun Sands (son of Tony).

WR: After Dezmon Briscoe, Kerry Meier and Johnathan Wilson, it seemed that true freshmen Bradley McDougald, Erick McGriff and Chris Omigie were getting their chances to impress. They are all physically imposing and looked like Big 12 football players (this, of course, is a change from past groups of true freshmen). Tertavian Ingram also got a good look, as did converted cornerback Isiah Barfield.

TE: Tim Biere made a great touchdown catch that got a positive reaction from OC Ed Warinner, so that was good. A.J. Steward was out there, too.

OL: The starting group looked this way: LT Tanner Hawkinson, LG Carl Wilson, C Jeremiah Hatch, RG Sal Capra, RT Jeff Spikes. Hawkinson looked like a work in progress, and I'm sure he's getting used to having 30 extra pounds on him. He looked like a different guy. Other linemen getting a good look were "Big John" Williams, Brad Thorson, Darius Parish (moved from defensive tackle) and Trevor Marrongelli.

DL: Couldn't figure out "starters." But at DE, Max Onyegbule, Jake Laptad, transfer Quintin Woods and Jeff Wheeler seemed to be getting most of the work. Woods looked great getting around the corner. DT featured a powerful Richard Johnson Jr., Jamal Greene, Caleb Blakesley, Duane Zlatnik and transfer Travis Stephens.

LB: Interesting stuff here. Justin Springer, the heir apparent to Joe Mortensen at MLB, did not participate in drills. He is recovering from a torn ACL, so that's probably why. Drew Dudley was in his place and seemed to be around the ball a good bit. Angus Quigley got a lot of time and laid some big hits, and it appears they will use him as an extra rush end similar to the way they used James Holt. Arist Wright saw some time, as did true freshman Huldon Tharp and sophomore Steven Johnson. Tharp got more time than I would have expected from a true freshman LB.

DB: It at least seemed as if Anthony Davis had played his way above Justin Thornton. Daymond Patterson was on the other side, with Chris Harris (who left with what seemed like an ankle injury), Phillip Strozier and Darrell Stuckey as the other three. Transfer Calvin Rubles got a strong look at backup cornerback to Patterson. At safety, Lubbock Smith and Olaitan Oguntodu were in the mix on second team.

KO returners: Six guys took turns - Briscoe, Wilson, McDougald, Patterson, Stuckey and D.J. Beshears.

That's all I've got for now. I'm sure this will all be wrong come September.

Doesn't it concern you that ku seems to be putting a lot of true freshman on the field?

I don't see how that can be good when going up against the oklahoma/texas teams in number a few weeks.

Obviously it is way too early to tell & one would expect mangino and his coaches to try people out, I guess I'm talking more about the actual depth chart.

I don't know, just a thought.

He mentioned true freshmen about 3 times, only Tharp the LB as getting major minutes. Which is scary considering he's 20 lbs. light. But the others are 3rd string or deeper. So that's not really a concern.

I like that we have nice mix of veteran leadership with able youngsters!
