Mizzou shakes up depth chart at receiver

The latest depth chart released at Missouri on Monday shows considerable upheaval, including starting status changes at two wide receiver positions.

Jaleel Clark moved up to even with junior Wes Kemp at the Z receiver. And MU sports information director Chad Moller confirmed that - while not reflected on the depth chart - redshirt freshman L’Damian Washington had vaulted ahead of sophomore Rolandis Woodland as the starter at the X receiver.

Injury and a strong camp have also elevated true freshman Bud Sasser to the No. 2 position at the H slot receiver position behind T.J. Moe.

Injuries likely played a role in that listing as well. Jerrell Jackson - MU’s leading returning receiver - will likely miss MU’s first two games with a fractured bone in his left wrist. And, redshirt freshman Kerwin Stricker, who has had a good camp, has an ankle problem severe enough to be listed on the depth as out with an injury. The same goes for true freshman Jimmie Hunt, who injured an ankle in Saturday’s scrimmage and was in a protective boot.

After Monday's practice, MU Coach Gary Pinkel revealed that Jackson had surgery Monday morning to place a screw in his wrist.

Last week Jackson said he would wait on surgery until after the season in order to assure he could play this season.

Pinkel, however, said the prognosis for Jackson's return had not changed, that Jackson should miss only two games.

Junior Jayson Palmgren was listed No. 1 at offensive left guard ahead of redshirt freshman Justin Britt. And, although midway through practice he pulled on a protective red jersey, sophomore Kendial Lawrence moved past junior De’Vion Moore to No. 2 at tailback behind starter Derrick Washington.

Defensively, redshirt freshman Michael Sam - who had five sacks in Saturday’s scrimmage - moved past sophomore Marcus Malbrough to a No. 2 defensive end position behind Aldon Smith.

Junior Kenrote Walker emerged from a passel of players to take over the No. 2 spot at strong safety behind Kenji Jackson. The former No. 2, senior Jarrell Harrison, is out rehabbing a torn meniscus, although Harrison could return by the season opener.

There is now a logjam behind corner back starter Carl Gettis, a senior. Sophomore Kip Edwards, junior Trey Hobson and freshman Xavier Smith are all listed as even at No. 2.

There was also a unit shift from the pre-season depth chart. Andrew Gachkar and his backups are now listed as strongside linebackers. Zaviar Gooden and his backups are now flipped over to the weakside linebacker slot.

While normally most players are made available for interviews after each morning practice during MU’s pre-season practices, Moller said a change was made for Monday. Any player having dropped from his former position in the depth was taken off the list of possible interviews for that day.
